10 January William Campbell (La Nativité)

William Campbell, Cathedral Organist, gives the annual performance of Messiaen’s La Nativité du Seigneur in Leeds Cathedral, telling the story of the birth of Christ through nine musical meditations. Written when Messiaen was in his late-twenties, this landmark composition guides the listener through colourful depictions including the shepherds’ joy, a powerful representation of Christ’s ultimate suffering and resurrection, the ponderous Magi making their way to Bethlehem, and finally the iconic ‘God amongst us’ toccata to close the cycle.
